As per the rules framed by the Indian Government, service tax registration is required for every individual who is providing a taxable service of a value exceeding 9 lacs in a financial year. A Service Tax registration is an Indirect Tax registration in which the service tax is paid by the service provider and the same is collected from the recipient of the service.
At present the service tax is being collected @ of 14.5% on the taxable services . Apart from this there are few services which do not fall under this preview and are categorised as negative list services. These services are exempt from the service tax.
Service tax Registration is required for identification of the assesse, deposit service tax, file service tax returns and undertake various processes required under the Finance Act, 1994. Failure to obtain service tax registration would attract penalty in terms of section 77 of the Finance Act, 1994.
